TYPES OF DONATIONS
At the Darke County Foundation, people from all walks of life can make donations, large or small. Some donors start with a small fund, then continue to add money over the years, making the fund a permanent endowment that will distribute to a worthwhile cause for years to come. Whether you want to set up a personalized fund (now or in the future) or contribute to an existing fund that matches your personal interest, your donation plays an important part in supporting our community.
Donations receive the maximum tax benefits allowed by law. Gifts may be made in several ways including:
Cash, investments, or real estate. Such donations may result in reduced income taxes and estate taxes depending on an individual's circumstances.
Bequests. Specified gifts may be made by donors through their will or trust. Bequests to the foundation are deductible from federal and estate taxes.
Life Insurance. Transferring ownership of an insurance policy to the foundation provides for a charitable income tax deduction in the amount of the policy's present value. Upon death, the life insurance proceeds are not included as part of the donor's estate.
Non-endowed fund ($5,000 and over): Donors may support scholarships or recommend different charitable organizations to receive distributions from the principal amount. Donors choose how much and how often they would like distributions to be made. Non-endowed funds often grow to the endowment level as donors add money over time, making the fund permanent.
Designated fund ($10,000 and over): In this fund, donors name a specific charitable organization or project to receive an annual distribution from the principal amount, until the fund is depleted. Monies may be added over time to reach the endowment level, making the fund permanent.
Endowment fund ($25,000 and over): Each year, a portion of the interest income of this fund is distrib-uted to beneficiaries that are recommended by the donor. The donor may specify a grant to a specific charity, a scholarship to a Darke County student, or an unrestricted grant where the Foundation board de-termines where the funds could best be used in the county. Because grants are distributed from invest-ment earnings of this account, the original gift keeps giving in perpetuity.
Unrestricted fund ($5,000 and over): This type of fund offers the most flexibility and enables the Darke County Foundation to administer grants that respond to the ever-changing needs of the community. The board of directors has complete discretion over how these funds are used for grant making.
